DECLUTTERING YOUR HOME FOR SPRING

I love spring. To me it speaks of new life, hope, colour, cheerfulness and simplicity. It’s the perfect time for a fresh start in our homes. As the days get longer and brighter, there’s something about this season that inspires fresh energy and a desire to clear away the mental and physical clutter.
Organising your home for spring doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a few small steps, you can slowly create a space that feels peaceful, uplifting, and ready to welcome the new season.
1. Start Small
Choose one drawer, one shelf, or one category at a time. Or tackle crowded countertops and tables. Clutter tends to gather in these areas, but once they are clear, the room feels calmer and more spacious. Small wins keep you motivated and build momentum on the decluttering journey.
2. Sort Like with Like and Decide
As you go through items, ask yourself:
Do I use this?
Do I love this?
Does this add value to my life?
Do I have space for this?
Would I buy this in my current season of life?
3. Donate
Be mindful that it takes time and emotional energy to sell items that you are letting go of. Consider donating items over selling them, unless they are valuable or you are really in need of money.
Decide on a charity that you care about before starting, and drop your donations off there. I find that people generally love kids and animals and I normally donate to charities that support these causes.
Keep a donations box or bag on hand to place items into as you go along.
4. Refresh Your Wardrobe
As the weather warms up, it’s a great time to sort through your clothing. Pack away bulky winter items, and donate anything you no longer wear. This will give you space to position your summer clothing. Write a list of summer items that you might need to buy.
5. Freshen Up Your Kitchen
Check expiry dates on food items in your fridge and pantry and wipe down shelves. Get rid of broken items and duplicates, and group similar items that you are keeping together. A tidy and simple kitchen makes cooking meals so much easier.
6. Refresh the Space
Once the clutter is gone, clean the space and perhaps add something to bring in a sense of freshness - a plant or a vase of flowers from the garden, a colourful cushion, or even just open the windows for fresh air. It makes the home feel renewed and alive again after the winter months.
7. Create Easy Systems and Habits
Once you’ve decluttered, put simple systems in place to keep things organised. Have a basket for mail, hooks for keys, or labelled boxes for seasonal items. Do an end of day sweep through your home, putting items back where they belong. Try a “one-in, one-out” policy: if you bring something new into your home, let something else go.
Spring decluttering is more than tidying; it’s a way of giving yourself a fresh start. Even just 10 minutes a day can slowly bring calm, order, and joy back into your home. Think of it as making space for new opportunities, fresh energy, simplicity and happy moments.
